Georges Nélis, head of maintenance for the Belgian Air Force, was the highly motivated and passionate man who imagined a new era including a company to design, build, maintain and repair aircraft and a Belgian airliner. That was a century ago, and there were only a few steps from imagination to reality.
SABENA – Société Anonyme Belge d’Exploitation de la Navigation Aérienne was born on 23 May 1923, a few years after SABCA – Société Anonyme Belge de Constructions Aéronautiques was founded. SABENA started operating as the Belgian national carrier and hit the sky to Amsterdam, London, Paris and Copenhagen. From 1924, the Belgian national airliner pioneered the first routes to Africa, starting with Congo.
